What pressure is used for clinical HBOT?
Under the UHMS definition of clinical hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a patient breathes prescribed medical oxygen in a hard-sided chamber at no less than 2.0 atmospheres absolute (ATA), under physician oversight. Is HBOT FDA approved or cleared?
The FDA says HBOT devices are Class II medical devices cleared through its 510(k) process. A device clearance does not, by itself, establish that HBOT benefits every condition or that a particular chamber has been cleared. Verify a specific device and its intended use in the FDA database. Does Medicare cover HBOT?
Medicare's national coverage determination covers HBOT for specified conditions under stated criteria, including limits for diabetic lower-extremity wounds. What are the main device safety risks?
The FDA warns of fire risks in high-oxygen environments and recommends following device instructions, staff training, patient monitoring and maintenance checks. Ask a facility about these procedures before treatment. U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

What is HBOT?▾
HBOT stands for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It delivers oxygen inside a chamber under increased pressure. Treatment requires an assessment of the condition, equipment and supervision. [1, 2]

Is a hyperbaric chamber the same as HBOT?▾
A chamber is equipment. HBOT is a therapy. Compare each model's pressure, oxygen delivery, intended use and operating requirements, and ask a qualified clinician whether a proposed treatment is appropriate. A product name alone cannot answer that question.
What are the benefits and limitations of HBOT?▾
Established uses include decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning and selected difficult wounds or radiation injuries. Benefits depend on the indication and the individual. These uses do not establish benefits for every recovery or wellness claim. [2]
How many sessions are needed?▾
